CBD: A Conscious Consumption.

CBD: A Conscious Consumption.

CBD or cannabidiol is a compound found in hemp plants. CBD is non-intoxicating, non-psychoactive that is utilized for internal and external health. But what is the best way to take CBD for optimal health benefits?

History of CBD for Health

Marijuana has been used to treat pain as far back as 2900 B.C.  More recently, scientists have discovered that certain components of marijuana, including CBD, are responsible for its pain-relieving effects.

The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response.

Further studies by The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research have shown that CBD has had a positive effect on groups of people wanting a cure:

  • Sclerosis
  • Arthritis
  • Active pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Sleep disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders

CBD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and, in some cases, it was able to stop them altogether. Videos of the effects of CBD on these children and their seizures are readily available on the Internet for viewing, and they are quite striking. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD.

Ways to Take CBD

CBD acts on the brain and the body with therapeutic effects that may provide relief to an array of unpleasant symptoms, working its magic by imitating compounds that our bodies produce naturally, called endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids activate to maintain internal stability and optimal health, something we can all agree on striving for.

There are many different kinds of cannabinoids in cannabis plants. Currently, there are two routes of administration of CBD:.

  1. Orally: This is an efficient way to dose the cannabinoid. Swallowing drops of CBD oil under the tongue serves as the easiest and most streamlined way to consume the molecule in this fashion. One can also add CBD oil to food and drink to mask the taste.
  2. Topical: This doesn’t reach the bloodstream, instead, interacting with receptors in the skin to keep our largest organ balanced, healthy, and supple. Topical formulas contain a myriad of other molecules that help to maintain skin health, including scars and eczema. This is applied via creams, slaves, beauty products and more.

Will CBD get me “high”?

While CBD is a component of marijuana (one of hundreds), by itself it does not cause a "high." CBD is among the non-psychoactive compounds, meaning that it doesn’t get you “high” or give you a buzz like its familiar cousin, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). According to a report from the World Health Organization, "In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD."

Last Thoughts

Some CBD manufacturers have come under government scrutiny for wild, indefensible claims, such that CBD is a cure-all for cancer, which it is not. Research exploring the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) oil is still at a relatively early stage. However, more and more studies have started to demonstrate CBD’s potential therapeutic effects for a variety of conditions.
