Understanding a CBD Certificate of Analysis

Understanding a CBD Certificate of Analysis

When it comes to good CBD, it's important to know what ingredients are in it. To ensure you are purchasing a high-quality CBD product from a reputable brand, it's important to review documentation which shows that you’re actually getting what it's advertising on the label.

One of the most important documents a CBD manufacturer should offer is a certificate of analysis, which will help you better understand exactly what is in the product you are considering buying - and more importantly - consuming.

CBD Products & Ingredients

From creams to tinctures, there are so many different types of CBD products available in the market today. As you research more about CBD, you repeatedly hear to make sure the CBD product you intend to buy is lab tested. Which makes sense, because people who use them cannot assume they are safe. The good news is that consumers can find high-quality CBD products if they do their research.

To be sure a CBD product truly contains the cannabinoids and other ingredients stated on the label, you should look for what is known as a certificate of analysis. A certificate of analysis is awarded to a CBD product that has been tested by a third-party laboratory and examined for quality. This analysis consists of several tests, which can include the following:

  •  Cannabinoid content.
  •  Terpene content.
  •  Testing for common contaminants.

Why is a CBD certificate important?

A CBD certificate of analysis provides transparency into the product that you’re buying. A certificate of analysis shows that the company has submitted to a third-party examination of its products. The analysis contains detailed information about what is included in the product, such as cannabinoids, terpenes, and pesticides.

A certificate of analysis will also indicate the accuracy of the brand's labeling. If the contents described in the certificate of analysis don't match the labeling on the brand's products, then it should warrant a problem. In fact, several studies have shown that more than 70% of the CBD products sold online are mislabeled. Some of them did not have CBD in them at all.

At Lost Range, we test every batch of products we manufacture. Our Hemp CBD products are derived right here in Colorado. The hemp is grown under the Colorado sun by local farmers who ensure a pure product. The hemp is also extracted here in Colorado and those extracts are then used in our small batch, handmade hemp CBD products. Our products are a true full circle product supporting an array of local Colorado grown small businesses.

What's more, each batch is tested at multiple stages for purity and potency. Not only do we test our extract for cannabinoid and terpene content, we also test for mycotoxins and residual solvent, among other contaminants.

5 steps to reading a CBD Certificate of Analysis

There are several elements of reading a certificate of analysis and interpreting it correctly. Here are five steps that will guide you through a complicated document at first glance.

  1. Check the name of the Laboratory that ran tests - Review the laboratory that ran the test results. You should check to see if the laboratory is ISO/IEC accredited and abides by industry standards and best practices.
  2. Ensure that the batch number on the COA and product is the same - A batch number refers to the group of CBD products that were made with a specific "batch" of CBD extract. A certificate of analysis batch number must match the batch number on your CBD product to be relevant. Otherwise, the certificate of analysis could be referring to an altogether different product than the one you're considering.
  3. Examine the cannabinoid and terpene profile - When examining the certificate of analysis, compare the cannabinoid content listed in the test results to the profile listed on the product label. The two should match or be close to what is on the label. Otherwise, it could suggest the labeling is inaccurate.
  4. Pay attention to the heavy metal analysis - Substances like heavy metals can be harmful to our bodies. To ensure that your products are safe, check the analysis to be sure a heavy metal testing was performed.
  5. Examine the pesticide analysis list - Pesticides and herbicides like glyphosate can be used during the hemp cultivation process and make their way into CBD products. At Lost Range, we also test for mycotoxins and residual solvent, among other contaminants. Review the certificate of analysis to ensure they’ve tested for pesticides or herbicides in the product.
